The History of Israel Through Film Starts February 23 Presented by Cinema U All films shown are award winners with English subtitles. Discussions and lectures following films.
The ingathering of Jews to Israel resulted in six major periods evolving into the emerging Israeli society of today. Participate in a discussion and view Israeli films that will focus on each period of immigration and the effect they have had on Israel's past, present and future. Discussions will be led by Jack Boeko, originator and founder of Cinema U, who will discuss the history and development of the Israel film industry.
• Tuesday, February 23 • 7:00 p.m. Sweet Mud (2006) Winner of Grand Jury Prize, 2007 Sundance Film Festival A 12 year-old begins to question the kibbutz's rigid way of life in this utopian coming-of-age tale. • Tuesday, March 2 • 7:00 p.m. Dear Mr. Waldman (2007) Winner of Audience Award, 2007 Palm Springs Film Festival The children of Holocaust survivors try to make their parents happy and compensate for the grief and loss of their past. • Tuesday, March 9 • 7:00 p.m. Kazablan (1973) Nominated for 2 Golden Globe Awards Israel's first musical tells the rousing story of star-crossed lovers, street gangs and cultural feuds. • Tuesday, March 16 • 7:00 p.m. Yana's Friends (2000) Winner of 10 Israeli Academy Awards During the 1991 Gulf War, a pregnant Russian immigrant is deserted by her husband and left to fend for herself. • Tuesday, March 23 • 7:00 p.m. Live and Become (2005) Winner of Audience Award at 18 U.S. Film Festivals The film follows the life of an Ethiopian boy who pretends to be Jewish so he can be airlifted to Israel during Operation Moses. • Tuesday, April 13 • 7:00 p.m. The Syrian Bride (2004) Winner of Best Film, 2004 Montreal World Film Festival A Druze wedding gives a human view of political conflict within one family living on the Golan Heights.
