Joey Miller is the undisputed king of Detroit party emcees. He’s also a single father and deeply in debt. During one wedding performance, all his prized equipment is destroyed in a freak accident. To make matters worse, he is supposed to emcee his daughter’s bat mitzvah in four weeks. With no other options, Joey turns to his shady uncle for money, who agrees with one condition: Joey must steal his grandmother’s famous top secret dill pickle recipe – a recipe she has vowed to take to her grave.

Several years ago Ron Suskind, an American Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author, was a featured speaker at Jewish Book Festival. He told us the story of his son Owen, who as a thriving 3 year old, suddenly and inexplicably went silent. For years after, Owen could not connect with others or convey his thoughts or feelings, until the family discovered a unique way of communicating through Disney classic films. When Suskind was at the J discussing his book, Life, Animated: A Story of Sidekicks, Heroes, and Autism, he said it was being made into a film. We are thrilled and proud to present the film, Life, Animated, as part of this year’s Jewish Film Festival.
Life Animated, interweaves classic Disney sequences with realistic scenes from Owen’s life, to explore how his identification and empathy with characters like Simba, Jafar and Ariel allowed him the means to understand his feelings and interpret reality.
